A Forecasting Platform Trader Profited $436,000 on Bets Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to political events.
This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
